ReGrowing Food

Don't throw that seed / core / top / knob away. You may be able to regrow your fruit or veggie for free.

Plants and trees are intelligent. It's in their DNA to spread their seeds and grow wherever they have the chance to as a means of reproduction. Using the wind / birds / insects / animals, plants reproduce when nature takes their seeds to a new place and plops them in the ground, however that may be. When we buy food, we hold in our hand all of the information from the entire tree or plant, completely ready to reproduce itself given the proper opportunity.

Growing a garden may require a little room, but regrowing a few things doesn't need to. Most of the time, you can put a stem / seed / cutting in a glass of water and it will grow roots. Leave it in water or transport it to a pot, give it away or put it in the ground somewhere. Why constantly buy food when you can start to grow your own? It's incredibly simple.

Growing your own food is like planting your own money!

Veggies and fruits that regrow in water include:

  • Basil
  • Mint
  • Celery
  • Cilantro
  • Lettuce
  • Scallions
  • Pineapple
  • Carrots
  • Lentils
  • Bok Choy
  • Fennel
  • Lemongrass
  • Cabbage
  • Onions
  • Sweet Potato
  • Beans

Veggies to plop in dirt to regrow include:

  • Avocados
  • Tomatoes
  • Pumpkin and Squash
  • Apples
  • Papaya
  • Beans
  • Peppers
  • Cherries
  • Chesnuts
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric

...and the list goes on!

Basically, anything with a seed will regrow. My personal favorites are basil, mint, celery and carrots, although I have recently regrown a tomato plant from a small branch I accidentally injured - something I previously thought impossible. Definitely my new favorite.
